Right to repair is winning on paper and losing in practice

Several jurisdictions now require manufacturers to sell parts and publish service manuals. Compliance has been broadly achieved, and independent repair has not become much easier.

The gap between access and ability

A part you can buy is not a part you can fit. Serialised components that must be paired in software, firmware that refuses unknown modules, and parts priced near the cost of replacement all survive the letter of the law.

What would actually move

Rules that address pairing and pricing, rather than availability alone, are the ones repair shops keep asking for.
